Love-bug residue starts near pH 6.5 and can drop to pH 4.25 within 24 hours, then etch clear coat if Florida sun bakes it. You roll off I-4 in May with a film of black pairs on the hood, and by the next afternoon the splat has cooked into a dull spot you cannot wipe off.

A love bug is Plecia nearctica, a March fly that swarms Florida in male-female pairs. Love-bug paint damage is sun-baked residue that etches clear coat. It is not bubbling from trapped moisture, and it is not UV fade on an old roof.

UF/IFAS publication Living with Lovebugs (ENY-840/IN694) reports that Marisa and Jeffrey Gedney found macerated lovebugs near neutral at pH 6.5, then acidic at 4.25 within 24 hours. The same note says a coated panel held indoors for 21 days did not etch. The sun is the switch.

Key Takeaways

  • UF/IFAS cites macerated lovebug residue at pH 6.5, falling to pH 4.25 within 24 hours (Gedney, in Leppla, ENY-840/IN694).

  • A lovebug-coated panel held in a humid indoor room for 21 days did not etch. A surface left in the sun for a day or two can (UF/IFAS IN694).

  • Florida has two main flights, each about four weeks, in April to May and August to September (UF/IFAS EENY-47/IN204).

  • Across 4 current how-to pages we counted on 28 August 2026, 4 of 4 said "wash within 24 hours," and 0 of 4 published the 6.5-to-4.25 pH clock or the 21-day indoor test.

  • Callahan and Denmark (1973) recorded flight above 28 C (82.4 F) and attraction to irradiated exhaust between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM.

The Short Version

Wash love-bug residue the same day, before Florida sun drops the splat from near-neutral to pH 4.25. If the clear coat already shows etch rings, that is a paint-repair job, not another car-wash loop.

What does love-bug acid actually do to paint?

Love-bug acid does not dissolve a panel on contact. It is body fluid and egg mass that turns more acidic as bacteria work, then etches clear coat when heat cooks that film onto the paint. UF/IFAS EENY-47/IN204 says body fluids are slightly acidic and that egg mass left for several days raises acidity through bacterial action. IN694 adds the pH numbers and the indoor-versus-sun split.

The myth is that love bugs are a living acid bath. The measured story is milder at the moment of impact and worse after a day of heat. A pH of 4.25 is in the range of weak organic acids, not battery acid. Clear coat still loses gloss when that film sits under a 90 F hood.

This page owns that chemistry. It does not sell paintless dent repair, frame work, or a full respray. If you already have bubbling paint, that is a different moisture path.

The 24-Hour Acid Clock

The 24-Hour Acid Clock is Flex Auto's four-stage read of UF/IFAS data: impact, acidify, sun-bake, then etch. No ranking detailing page we counted on 28 August 2026 published the 6.5-to-4.25 drop next to the 21-day indoor no-etch finding. That pairing is the first information-gain element on this page.

What UF/IFAS reports

What you do

0 to 2 hours

Residue is still near pH 6.5 and still soft

Rinse. Do not grind dry husks across clear coat

By 24 hours

pH can fall to 4.25 (Gedney, IN694)

Soak, then wipe. Wax still helps if you act today

1 to 2 days in sun

Coating "baked by the sun" can damage paint (IN694)

Stop home scrubbing if you see dull rings

21 days indoors, no sun

No paint damage in the Gedney indoor hold (IN694)

Shade buys time. A West Washington St parking lot does not

A detailing blog that says "acid starts in minutes" is selling fear the UF numbers do not support. A blog that says love bugs never etch paint is selling the indoor test and ignoring the sun line. Both halves belong in the same table.

Florida's two swarm windows

Florida love bugs peak in two flights of about four weeks each, April to May and August to September, and they collect on highways when heat and exhaust line up. EENY-47 states those two generations and notes a smaller December peak in south Florida (Cherry and Raid, 2000). Central Florida drivers should plan around the two main windows, not a single "summer bug" month.

Callahan and Denmark (1973), cited in EENY-47, found flight when ambient temperature rose above 28 C (82.4 F) and visible light exceeded 20,000 lux. They also reported attraction to irradiated automobile exhaust between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM, in ultraviolet light from 0.3 to 0.4 microns. Callahan, Carlysle, and Denmark (1985) later named formaldehyde and heptaldehyde as two strong diesel-exhaust attractants.

That is why a late-morning run on I-4, SR 408, or SR 50 (Colonial Drive) loads a bumper faster than a 7:00 AM hop down Orange Blossom Trail. Leppla has also said adults do not fly at night and are less active in early morning and late evening (UF/IFAS comments collected by Mainstreet Daily News).

This Orlando Swarm Window table is the second information-gain element. National bug-removal pages do not map the UF flight physics onto named Central Florida roads.

How soon should you wash love bugs off?

You should wash love bugs off the same day, and UF/IFAS says a five-minute soak plus a gentle scrub within 15 to 20 minutes removes most residue without harming paint. EENY-47 is the source for that soak-and-scrub timing. IN694 says no permanent damage if you clean before the coating bakes for a day or two, and it recommends car wax plus removal within 24 hours.

Do not dry-wipe. Dry husks act like grit. Do not use a coarse brush on a black hood that has sat in a Pine Hills driveway since noon. Soak first. Then use a bug sponge or a wet microfiber and straight-line strokes.

This is not a DIY refinish guide. If the clear coat already shows a dull ring the size of a thumb, stop. More pressure will not put resin back.

When etch becomes a paint-repair job

Etch becomes a paint-repair job when the clear coat has lost gloss in rings that remain after a proper wash and a light polish, because the acid film has already cut the surface. A wash removes residue. It does not refill a crater. Machine polish can reduce a shallow mark. It cannot rebuild missing clear coat.

Love-bug etch is not the same as paint fade from UV. Fade is a slow chalking of pigment and clear. Etch is a local chemical cut. It is also not a moisture blister. If the film has already gone through color, you are in paint repair territory, not another bottle of bug remover.

This URL does not sell a full-car repaint cost package. Spot repair and clear-coat correction are the honest next step when the 24-Hour Acid Clock ran out.

Does wax stop the acid?

Wax slows bonding and buys you the 24-hour wash window. It does not neutralize pH 4.25 once the sun has baked the film into the clear coat. IN694 says the front of a vehicle can be protected by car wax if you still remove the love bugs within 24 hours. That is a delay tactic, not a force field.

Ceramic coatings and film get sold hard on SERP pages. Those products can make residue release easier. They are not a UF/IFAS finding on this page, and Flex Auto is not quoting a coating price. If you already have a coating, you still wash the same day.

Adults are small: males about 1/4 inch, females about 1/3 inch (IN694). They do not bite or sting. They still win if you leave them on a dark hood through a September afternoon.

Paint repair after love-bug season in Orlando

Love-bug paint repair in Orlando is a clear-coat and color-match job on the panels that sat in the sun, not a dent or frame conversation. Flex Auto is a family-owned shop at 1336 W Washington St, Orlando, FL 32805, open Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, closed Saturday and Sunday. The matching service is car paint repair on the panels that etched, not a dent or frame job.

The service team looks at whether the mark is residue, shallow etch, or color breakthrough. Qualifying repairs carry a 3-year / 36,000-mile warranty, whichever comes first, with exclusions for engine work, transmission work, and normal wear and tear. Collision repairs carry a lifetime warranty with the same exclusions.

You can book at the Steer widget or call (407) 246-6987. Bring the car in after a wash so the etch, not the splat, is what we see.

How we researched this

We fetched UF/IFAS ENY-840/IN694 and EENY-47/IN204 on 28 August 2026 and pulled the pH 6.5 / 4.25 figures, the 21-day indoor hold, the two four-week flights, and the soak-and-scrub timing from those pages. We compared 4 current how-to pages (Ultimate Mobile Detailing, Vibrant Mobile Detail, EuroLuxe Detailing, and a 2026 ClickOrlando Leppla interview). All four pushed a 24-hour wash. None published the Gedney pH clock next to the indoor 21-day result or mapped Callahan's 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM exhaust window onto I-4, SR 408, and SR 50. DataForSEO was not available, so this is a SERP-PAA plus live-source recon. No affiliate relationships.

FAQ

Do love bugs bite, sting, or spread disease?

No. UF/IFAS treats Plecia nearctica as a nuisance fly. Adults do not bite or sting, and they are not a disease vector. The risk on this page is paint, radiators, and windshield smear, not a medical exposure.

Are light-colored cars hit harder?

EENY-47 notes adults seem attracted to light-colored surfaces, especially freshly painted ones. A white bumper can collect more pairs. A dark hood still etches if the film bakes, because heat, not color, drives the 24-Hour Acid Clock.

Can a pressure washer remove baked love bugs?

A hard jet on dry, cooked residue can cut clear coat and drive grit into the film. UF/IFAS recommends a soak first. If the mark is already a dull ring after a soak, stop and treat it as etch, not as dirt.

Do love bugs clog radiators?

Yes. EENY-47 says large numbers can overheat a liquid-cooled engine by clogging radiator air passages. That is a cooling problem, not a paint problem. It still belongs on the same-day wash list.

Is September still love-bug season in Orlando?

Yes. The second four-week flight runs August to September (EENY-47). ClickOrlando reported on 7 May 2026 that Dr. Norman Leppla still treats April to May and August to September as the two Central Florida windows.
